Commercial Pilot Training & TAA

Commercial Pilot Certification is the step toward flying for compensation or hire — built on higher proficiency standards and more advanced aircraft experience than the Private Pilot Certificate.

FAA Part 61 Minimum Requirements

Per 14 CFR 61.129(a) — single-engine airplane category and class rating.

250 hours minimum total flight time as a pilot

These are FAA-mandated minimums; a current Private Pilot Certificate is a prerequisite.

Total time breakdown includes:

  • 100 hours in powered aircraft, of which 50 hours must be in airplanes
  • 100 hours of pilot-in-command time, including 50 hours in airplanes and 50 hours of cross-country time (at least 10 in airplanes)

10 hours solo or sole-manipulator PIC time, including:

  • One cross-country flight of at least 300 nautical miles total distance, with landings at 3 points, one segment at least 250 nautical miles straight-line
  • 5 hours of night flight with 10 takeoffs and landings at an airport with an operating control tower

20 hours of training on required areas of operation, including:

  • 10 hours of instrument training, at least 5 hours in a single-engine airplane
  • 10 hours of training in a complex airplane, Technically Advanced Airplane (TAA), or turbine-powered airplane
  • One 2-hour daytime cross-country flight of more than 100 nautical miles straight-line distance
  • One 2-hour night cross-country flight of more than 100 nautical miles straight-line distance
  • 3 hours of training in preparation for the practical test, within 2 calendar months before the test
TAA Logging

Why the Cessna 172H Qualifies as a TAA

Under 14 CFR 61.129(j), a Technically Advanced Airplane (TAA) must be equipped with:

  • An electronic Primary Flight Display (PFD) — airspeed, attitude, heading, altitude, and vertical speed indication
  • A Multi-Function Display (MFD) with a GPS-based moving map showing navaids, airports, and airspace
  • An integrated two-axis autopilot

Chapman Flight Academy's Cessna 172H is equipped with a Garmin GTN-750 navigator, dual Garmin G5 flight displays, and a Garmin GFC-500 two-axis autopilot — meeting the TAA equipment standard and allowing TAA time to be logged toward the Commercial Pilot training requirement above.
